COYOTE CANYON CABALLOS DE ANZA
Several years ago California State Parks rounded up the last herd of wild horses in San Diego County, horses of Spanish descent that lived in Coyote Canyon, a part of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park. In an effort to preserve the gene pool of horses with a heritage going back to Juan Bautista de Anza and the Cauhilla Indians, a group of individuals formed a non profit organization, Coyote Canyon Caballos de Anza, and rescued 4 stallions from the herd. The remaining stallions were gelded and the mares were shipped to a sanctuary in South Dakota. CincoSieteTres0939.jpg

The goal of CCCdA is to reestablish the Coyote Canyon Herd to their own sanctuary in the mountains above the Anza-Borrego Desert. The group has acquired Spanish mares from a roundup of Sulfur Springs Spanish Mustangs in the fall of 2008. Ten of the acquired mares have foaled and now 27 horses await their own sanctuary to insure that the bloodlines of de Anza’s horses will be preserved for generations to come. Nineteen mares and foals currently are being held at Kay Levie’s ranch in Borrego Springs, California.

A portion of the proceeds from the Mustang Ride/Photography adventure will be donated to CCCdA by Kay Levie to provide feed and support for the Coyote Canyon mustangs. GrullaMareStar0976.jpg
